Night Creature

What fat-bodied amphibian is brownish or grayish in color with jewel-like eyes?

In captivity, it can live to be between 4-15 years old.

It is nocturnal and hibernates during the day in burrows, trees or under leaves.

It usually eats insects, plants, fruits and vegetables?

Give up?

More clues...

It mates in the Spring and the female lays her eggs in the water.

It has glands that secrete fluids that can be toxic if taken internally.

Still don't know?

One more big clue....

It has a stubby body with short hind legs, webbed toes and warty dry skin!

Did you guess it?

If you guessed a TOAD, you are correct! We have many of them hopping about our yard in the evenings. If you look closely, you can see that this fat fellow had his eye on a mosquito on the brick wall.

Hm! I was guessing frogs, but then I read about the toxic fluid and got confused! So, hello there, Mr. Toad! He is a cutie pie...I'm a sucker for big googly eyes. And any creature that eats mosquitoes is my BFF. *giggle* Thanks for sharing!

Frog for me, too, right up until toxic -- and then I thought, "What else could it be?" and felt like an idiot when I read Toad. Duh!
