Fun Monday - What Puberty Can Do To You

Today's Fun Monday is all about bad hair days. Sandy at Myanderings would like to hear about all the terrible, horrible, ill-conceived hair stories out there. Here is my story:

Once upon a time, a cute little girl with long, straight, blonde hair and pretty blue eyes was happy and care free. All through the little girl's elementary school life, her mommy always styled her hair in pig tails, a long braid, or brushed to the side and gently pulled back off her face with a colorful barrette. Then one day, when the little girl grew a little (in about the seventh grade), her hair became a brillo pad mess! What seemed like an overnight disaster to the little girl was the result of puberty! The long, straight, silky blonde hair of this sweet innocent little girl was now an unruly, tangled, bird's nest.

The tween-ager girl was so distraught over her hair, she didn't know what to do. All she wanted was straight hair. So, every night when the tween-ager girl would go to bed, she would wear a sailor's cap, (quite like the one pictured below) folded down atop her head to flatten her unruly hair. By the next morning, she had acheived the "flat hair" look. This was the routine for many years, until one day, the girl learned to use a curling iron, flat iron, hair dryer and hundreds of different hair styling products.

Today, the girl is well into her middle-age years and has given into her golden locks. Her husband, family, friends, hairdresser, strangers, etc. say she is truly blessed to have beautiful, curly hair. So, the grown woman now realizes that God has blessed her with this gift and she has learned to live with it.
******
Still today, I struggle with my hair and I sometimes "long" for straight hair, but those feelings never last, as the flat iron has become my friend and I am able to straighten my hair one day and let it be curly the next!

Check out the other Fun Monday Bad Hair Day stories at Myanderings. Thanks for hosting, Sandy!

OH, straight hair...in high school, we would iron our hair...WITH AN IRON !
Mine actually didn't need to be ironed, it was "Indian-straight." (I can say that, I'm pretty much Indian.)
But, when chemo did its thing, my hair came back curly.
Love the beautiful blonde hair ! Beautiful !

I have always wanted curls. I do not try to put them in with a curling iron. They don't last long enough to make the effort worthwhile.

Oh, what I would have given for curly hair when I was young! My hair was straight, fine, and never looked combed even when it was. I guess it just goes to show that no matter what we have, we're never happy.

interesting post. yes, we too would iron our hair with iron when we were young and stupid, why I say stupid is because it was a charcoal iron. Many girls got burnt

I am so happy that you now realize that your hair is your crown and glory. Just believe people when they say you have beautiful hair. Most would gladly trade with you...me being one of them. Happy FM Kelly

What a fabulous story! You do have gorgeous hair - as I read along, I wondered "What hair horror stories could CL EVER have to tell? Her hair is beautiful!" But yes, when we are tweens/teens, we'll go to any lengths (pun sort of intended) to get our hair to do what we want it to. I could tell a shameful story about me, a perm and a home-dye job that made me look like a neon poodle *yikes* *giggle* Happy FM to you!

The same thing happened to mine, it started straight and at some time (unsure when) it turned into curls and now I feel like I have the best of both worlds - I can straighten it when I like or wear it curly.

Great post!

First, those sweet young photos. How lucky you are to have them, Church Lady. From my curley-haired friends I've learned about the usefulness of flat irons. Not my particular challenge. And I think it's fascinating that your hair texture would change so dramatically when going though puberty. New one on me. I agree with some of your other commenters though. Your hair in your profile photo is just beautiful--enjoy it in its natural state!

We should have exchanged ! I had the same hairstyle as you when I was a little girl ! but then it remained and my hairs were so flat ! I tried it with perms, and since 2000 I made peace with myself and just have a good haircut !

You must have been kissed by the blue fairy or something. heh heh. I've heard of people having a catastrophic illness that changed their hair. But puberty is a new one to me. I only grew hair. ha ha!

I always wanted curly hair. I have a curly haired granddaughter and I am now happy.

Enjoy it sister! Those of us with stick straight hair long for curls, curls, curls. I have some sad perm tales I could tell.

We did used to iron our hair! Or we would use empty orange juice cans as rollers so that it would be straight but not too straight. We truly were never happy.

Thanks for playing and for bringing back some great memories.

My d.i.l. has curly hair like yours -- it's gorgeous. It can't be duplicated. That is so funny about the sailor hat tho. Whatever works!

Hello my friend! I had to come back and say THANK YOU for your wonderful comments *sniff* You "get it" for sure - I am not sure if I'm more nervous about the drive or about the new job itself. I did have a driving commute a number of years ago, but it was all on backroads and I did exactly what you described - I used that time for my "me" time, time to think or sing or talk to thin air.

And I'm sure I'll get accustomed to it; I just have to look at it as an opportunity to grow and learn. *sigh*
