Dry Sink - Before & After

I inherited an antique dry sink from my late grandmother who passed in September of 2004. It was kinda neat how I actually became the owner of it. I paid $100 Monopoly dollars for it during a family "silent auction" of my grandmother's estate months following her death.  During the silent auction, each family member was given Monopoly money and we placed silent bids on each and every peice of furniture and household item in her home. I "won" several items that day, including some jewelry, dishes, books and the dry sink. We all knew my grandmother was looking down on us that day with a big smile, as she loved when the family got together. We all laughed and had a good time and better yet, we all went home that day with a piece of my grandmother's life, a keepsake, a memento...a memory.

From that day on, I have never known what to do with that piece of furniture. It has moved from room to room in my home and has not quite found it's place. I have never put anything in it, although at one time my turtle tank sat on top of it and that is the most useful it has ever been.

I finally think I have found the perfect place for it. Freedom Writer (hubby) is often complaining about his small section of closet and has longed for some extra "drawers" for his "drawers". He has a large dresser, but thought how convenient it would be to have a smaller dresser in the master bathroom for his, *ahem*, undergarments if you will. So, I once again moved the dry sink to our master bathroom and wa-la! It is perfect. Perfect, except for its' ugliness. I felt the dry sink needed a makeover. Nothing a little paint won't fix.

Here it is before the makeover. It is an ugly brown and does not go in my bright white bathroom:

And here it is after the paint was applied by me and Nature Girl:

And here it is after I applied the "distressed" look by peeling away some of the gloss paint and exposing bits and pieces of the dark wood underneath. (click on image to enlarge) This effect was done using a razor blade, which I give full credit to Nature Girl (my 11 year-old daughter), as it was her idea!

Excellent! I love the idea of using Monopoly money for a silent auction of a loved one's belongings. Great idea.

I'm impressed. Now will you come help me with my bedroom furniture. I've been wanting to do exactly that to it for years.

It was a fun day! I also "won" a few pieces of furniture which remind me of our grandmother on a daily basis. Your updated dry sink has turned out beautifully! Job well done to the both of you!

I love natural wood and I don't know that I could have stood the idea of painting it, but the dry sink does look lovely finished.
