Well I finally did it. I took my first Zumba class.... and I have fallen in love with this fast-paced aerobic fitness routine that combines Latin and International music and has been popular in the U.S. since 2001. I was joined by five other friends including my mom and sister, who had never taken a Zumba class before and I have to say it was somewhat comforting knowing I would not be the only person in the room flailing my arms around and tripping over my own feet. No offense, my friends! Good thing the back row was open for us beginners!
Music is definitely the key element in Zumba. The pulsating music is designed with specific beats and tempo changes and the combination of salsa, belly dancing, tango, hip hop and many other forms of Latin dancing, targets every muscle group in your entire body! According to Wikipedia, the Zumba workout provides fitness benefits because its routines feature interval training sessions with fast and slow rhythms and resistance training, which are intended to tone and sculpt the body while burning fat.
After this hour-long workout, in which I burned off 500 calories, using muscles I never knew existed, grinding like I've never grinded before and pulsating like I was in a low budget porn movie,
I need a bottle of Advil I am ready for more! Seriously though, I think I lost my hips. I believe they fell off somewhere on the Zumba floor!
Now if you'll excuse me, I need some ice cream to go along with my ice packs and ibuprofin!
