Nourishment To My Soul

Family life is full of major and minor crises -- the ups and downs of health, success and failure in career, marriage, and divorce -- and all kinds of characters. It is tied to places and events and histories. With all of these felt details, life etches itself into memory and personality. It's difficult to imagine anything more nourishing to the soul.
-- Thomas Moore

Over the Labor Day weekend we attended a family reunion at my Aunt's home in Frederick, Maryland. The reunion was for my Dad's side of the family.  Getting the entire family together at one place at the same time is quite an undertaking, so I am grateful for my Aunt who coordinated the event.

Sadly, the family does not get together often. Sometimes, a year or more will go by before all of us will gather together again. It is no secret that the family has grown. We have new babies and new marriages.  What a blessing!  So, finding the space for all of us to gather is no easy task. Not all of us live within close proximity of each other, also making it difficult to get together. We are all very busy with our individual lives and individual families.

So, it's understandable that we don't gather often. But when we do, I cherish every moment. I love to see how the kids have grown and I enjoy watching them interact and play like they just saw each other yesterday.  I  love chatting with each aunt, uncle and cousin and catching up on the happenings of their day to day lives.

The older I get, the more I realize how important family is. So often we lead our daily lives as if we take our family for granted. The love of a family is life's greatest blessing...

That's swell. I need to see my extended family more often. Most of them I love to see, but not often enough.

Cool picture! Often times I take my family for granted. I need to stop that. Thanks for reminding me to be thankful for family...

I have lived several thousand miles away from my family for years. When I first moved I visited home often, but as time pasted the gaps got longer, some as many as three years. Now only a little over 7 hours separates us and I have seen my sisters three times this Summer and I have seen the cousins. Aunts and Uncles twice this year. As I get older I find I am appreciating them more and very happy to have them much nearer.

I totally agree. I think I've learned to be more in tunned with the happenings in the family. Your collage looks awesome.
