The Hike

Have I mentioned that it is Autumn here in Southern Pennsylvania and it is my absolute favorite time of year?

I just love the smell and the briskness in the air and the muted colors that paint the landscape. There is no better time of year to hike along one of the many trails that surround the nearby lake and state park less than a mile from my home.

The closest hiking trail to my home happens to also be a horse trail. So, not only do you have to worry about the rocky terrain, but you must also look out for huge piles of *ahem* freshly laid horse poop that is scattered along the trail.

I was accompanied by my oldest daughter and her two friends. After we had hiked about 1/2 of a mile, they began to ask when we would be turning around to go back. I kept telling them that we were almost there. Where? They would ask. I told them there was an ice cream shop at the end of the trail. They continued to trek behind me very S L O W L Y.

It was a perfect Autumn day. The weather was sunny and mild with a lakeshore breeze blowing through the trees. The sailboats dominated the lake.

Much to their disappointment, there was no ice cream shop at the end of the trail, just water.  Lake water, that is.

By the looks on their faces, I think they had a good time anyway...

And now for the 3/4 mile hike back....

Well, the tailend hikers seem to have gotten over the no ice cream letdown. BTW, I love your recent "Meet Carl" post. Got really excited--thought there was a new kid on the block!

Your photographs illustrate why we enjoy fall so much. See you next week in your Halloween costume, CL. I see the porch is already decorated.

There is nothing, and I mean nothing better than an autumn day in PA. I think your photos prove it.

Lovely pictures! I'm loving autumn lately. Didn't used to. Used to be a spring person. But the scenery is spectacular, and the aroma is divine!
