Fun Monday - JC Superstar

I have not joined in the weekly meme, Fun Monday for quite some time now. But Roger over at A Screed In Time's topic for this week was an easy one for me. Here is Roger's assignment:

Please share with the group one of the following; your favorite book in the Bible, your favorite character in the Bible, or your favorite biblically based movie.

I decided to share my favorite biblically based movie with you since it is the first thing that popped in my head.

Jesus Christ Superstar is a rock opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber, with lyrics by Tim Rice. First staged on Broadway in 1971, it highlights political and interpersonal struggles between Judas Iscariot and Jesus. The opera is based very loosely on the Gospels' account of the last week of Jesus' life, beginning with the preparation for the arrival of Jesus and his disciples in Jerusalem, and ending with the Crucifixion. It was then made into a movie in 1973.

I remember going to see the play with my mom and sister about 10 or so years ago in Baltimore, MD. I also have the soundtrack and enjoy listening to it from time to time. If the musical ever comes to your area, I highly recommend seeing it. The video shows Jesus entering Jerusalem and features the song "Hosanna". By the way, did you know that the Greek word Hosanna means, 'please save us'?

Please be sure to visit Roger's Blog to check out what the other Fun Monday participants are sharing.

I remember seeing this movie at least 10 times when it first came out way back in 1973. I often wonder if the same people honoring Jesus on Palm Sunday were in the crowd Good Friday shouting "crucify him". I didn't realize what Hosanna meant, I thought it was praise, but I did google it for the meaning and yours pretty much matched what I read :)

Saw JC Superstar two times...would go see it again. Love the sound track. The clip you choose is one of my favorite parts. Thanks for the meaning of Hosanna...we sing alot of songs/hymns with that word in it and I never really knew the real definition.

I had the fortune to see Jesus Christ Superstar on stage last year. The performance was extremely moving. We have the soundtrack both on CD and vinyl.

It came through here not too long ago. I didn't get to go, but I did see that Ted Neeley is still playing Jesus! What a great career - playing Jesus for most of your adult life! The next time it comes through (which it does from time to time) I'm going!

I guess I'm in the minority and haven't seen it! Part of me likes the actor portraying Jesus to be more masculine, you know, a carpenter by trade. I did think Charleton Heston made a great biblical character.

That was a good play and the music was great.

I love the music most and the movie is fun too. I have never seen it on stage though, so I can't comment on that. I like when Andrew Lloyd Webber does religion, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is awesome, and also has great music, and that one I have seen live, on video, and have the soundtrack for. Donny Osmond was great in it, just saying. :)

Thanks for participating, and I really am hoping to post my thoughts on this by today, I'm such a slacker sometimes. :)
