These years of abundant production are known as the "mast" years. Acorns may cover the area around an oak tree several inches deep in a mast year, but only produce a few handfuls the following year.
It is just one true sign that the fall season is knocking at my back door - - literally, as acorns plunge like cluster bombs with every gust of wind and litter my yard like a carpet of marbles.
