Fun Monday - My Home Town

Happy Fun Monday to everyone! Our hostess this week is Pamela at The Dust Will Wait. I like Pam's motto! The assignment: Show pictures or tell in words what defines the place where you live.

I live in the Keystone State known as Pennsylvania. My family moved here 5 years ago from Maryland and it is the best life changing decision we have ever made. We are surrounded by rural country and it is not uncommon to see many working farms, many of which are owned and operated by Mennonite Families. Take a short drive to Lancaster, PA and it is like taking a step back in time. You will see many Amish families out and about in their horse and buggies. Today, there are over 25 different Amish, Mennonite, and Brethren church groups in Lancaster and surrounding Counties. The more traditional groups are called 'old order'. They do not permit electricity or telephones in their homes. By restricting access to television, radio, and telephones, the Amish are better able to keep the modern world from intruding into their home life.

Amish Country is a popular tourist attraction in Pennsylvania. Many people travel there to learn more about the Amish and to visit the various attractions such as horse and buggie rides, tours of Amish working Farms, shops where you can purchase homemade Amish furniture, quilts, food and crafts and not to mention the numerous restaurants featuring Pennsylvania Amish cooking. I have always been intrigued by the Amish. I respect their beliefs and admire that they are able to live the life they live in today's world.

Your post brought back many found memories. We visited Lancaster and other areas on a grand tour we did of New England. We both loved the area and Bob still talks about the food.

I love going up to Lancaster to see the Amish. The simple life they live is a contrast to most of us.

I loved driving through the country side when we lived there. Reminded me of home (Missouri). Do you guys ever eat at Shady Maple? We love that place and I really miss it and the grocery store there. They had great prices especially on their produce.

I enjoyed reading by the Amish in your state. Where I grew up in northeast Indiana, there were a number of Amish communities. I think that the rest of the culture adopted some of the tasty dishes.

we visited Pennsylvania in 1996 -- so very long ago. But I sure enjoyed those farms, and rolling hills, and the simplicity of it.

Thanks for reminding me of a lovely trip. You're very blessed to love and appreciate where you live.

I have been back to Lancaster twice when my sister lived in Delaware. It is a beautiful place and seeing the Amish makes it seem so peaceful.

Wonderful photos, thank you! I'm in the midst of buying a 10 acre Amish homestead farm (waiting as they finish adding electricity, LOL). I have enormous respect for the way they take care of the land and build. I feel incredibly blessed to have been able to get this property.

we lived in a smallish town (20k) where they had 'horse' parking for the amish, basically a post out in the parking lot away from the rest of the cars to hitch their wagons to. OR there were also round pens for them to put their horses in. it always made me do a double take to see them in WalMart.. just odd!

That's a nice area. I used to live up that way in Pottstown. Still have a friend or two up there.

I've never been to Pennsylvania, but would love to go to Mennonite country! THey could teach us all a thing or two about green living!
