Did you know that on March 19th the moon was closer to the earth than it has been in 18 years? It was a few thousand miles closer than normal - only 220,625 miles from the earth making it seem brighter and bigger creating the eye catching "Super Moon" effect. It should be noted that the Moon gets just as close to the Earth every month, but it's usually not a Full Moon when it does.
Here is Southern PA, we got to see a special "double moon" effect on March 19th.
It was absolutely amazing. Astronomers say this unique once in a blue moon occurrence is only visible in the state of PA because of the moon's elliptical orbit combined with the intergalactical atmosphere that hovers above the keystone state during the month of March.
Had ya goin' didn't I? I couldn't resist sharing a little trick photography with you all! Hey - it's all moonshine (nonsense, imagination, caused by the effects of the moon on the mind)!!
Here are some SOTC (straight out of the camera) shots I got of the "Super Moon" on March 19th and some I edited with special effects.
While the moon on March 19th was only 14% larger and 30% brighter, it was factually the closest, largest, and brightest of all full moons, and quite rare to boot and that is definitely something to moon over!

That is so cool. Just another reason PA rules!
Beautiful Pictures!
those are great pictures, and you had me, I was like "wow, two moons!!". You should have saved this post for April Fool's day, LOL. When we lived in Montana, I didn't know it at the time but the local paper always did an April Fool's story on April 1st. The first year we lived there they were talking about "ghost snakes" (white snakes) up on the rims (cliffs) where we lived. I read the story thinking "wow, never heard of white snakes, how interesting!" Told the kids about it, etc. Only to find out the next day it was an April Fool's joke :)
we didn't get to see the moon here, cloudy night :(
so I definitely enjoyed your pictures!!
betty
awesome pictures...love the textures you applied. I am soooo bummed I missed the whole episode..didnt even know about the "Super Moon" until the next day!!!
LOL, well I would like to have been fooled as that picture looks AWESOME but I did question its authenticity straight up.
Wow! I love the pictures!
Great shots! I am so glad you took these and shared them. It was so cloudy here we couldn't see the moon at all.
I was moon watching several nights during this time and trying to capture the "perigee" (so I learned from weatherman!)moon. It was lovely at one point clouds cross half. I tried to photograph and just got golden ball in black night. None of your trick photography, CL! This post was great fun!
Fun picture! Yep, you had me too, thinking WOW! :)
