I have been a busy little painter around here this winter! I completed Nature Girl's room makeover (if you haven't seen it yet, you can check it out here) and have been diligently working on Funny Face's "pink" room.
Painting is one task I don't mind doing. It makes a room feel clean and new again. I have much experience with painting. In fact, I think I have pretty much painted every single room in this house, including the ceiling and trim work. Of course I had a little help from FW and family. But for the most part, I was the soul sole painter of our home.
I am most proud to boast about one of my trademark painting techniques. It is the one thing everyone always notices about my work. And, since everyone is always asking how I do it, I thought I should let you all know that it is a painting tip my Daddy taught me and I'm willing to share it with you all today, because that's the kind of girl I am and I'm sure my Daddy won't mind. It really is quite simple.
When you have completed your second coat of paint and it has dried completely, take your painter's tape and apply it to the top portion of the wall about 1/8" to 1/4" down from the ceiling completely around the room (on all walls) so it looks like this:
My Dad demonstrates his technique in July of 2003 in our newly constructed home:
Press the tape to ensure that it is sealed against the wall. Apply 1-2 coats of white ceiling paint (or whatever color your ceiling is) to the top portion of the wall above the painter's tape.
Be certain the paint is dry before peeling off the tape. This extra step, which gives you a clean line and finished look to your paint job can be done in under an hour (for a standard size room).
Now, since I have motivated you, go paint a room!

Love that pink!
Sorry, even with your tip, I'll never like painting.
Oh, I love that effect. So clean and crisp. And does it make the room look larger? BTW, I thought you and Nature Girl did a great job with the chocolate and blue/green(what's that color officially called?)room re-do. True Mother-Daughter DIYers!
I enjoy painting, but I can't stand the ceiling to wall transitions. This is an excellent hint and next time I paint...
I like the way it looks; never heard of this tip! I think I've painted three rooms in my lifetime, but in the days ahead that could change; I'll have to remember this!! thanks for sharing it with us!!
betty
It does give the walls a custom finished look. Wish I liked to paint...I am the worlds worst. You n Tray always do a great job painting. I cant wait to see Carleys new room!!!
Well, now, I've never thought of that. And you still don't get little bits of paint getting under the tape -- maybe we have more texture to our walls. I let Cate do the finish work -- he's really good at using that square painting block for the edges. Thanks!
It gives the appearance of bringing the ceiling down. I like the clean sharp image.
I guess I"m going to have to try that ... I have a couple of popcorn ceilings still hanging around that I need to get rid of first, tho
I always have the hardest time keeping the tape straight. Any suggestions on that? Also don't you have to go back and touch up the places that the paint gets under the tape? I can never get the paint to stay on top of the tape.
